Over the past few weeks, some things have been brewing in my heart. In my recent interactions with various people from various walks of life and in different situations, there has been a consistent narrative. In these times when everyone is encouraged to exercise their freedom of speech, everyone seems to have something to say and they are not careful to be nice about it. People feel entitled to criticize and impose their opinions; everyone has become an expert at speaking their ‘truth’; many people want to be ‘woke’ yet they’re disconnected from the source of life, and they’re roaming around like zombies. Let’s not even talk about how people misuse social media for these reasons.

When I was younger, this phrase was constantly rung into our ears, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” I am usually amazed at the audacity of people when they ask certain questions or make certain statements without hesitating. I have come to realize that many people’s love tanks are low or are practically running on empty.

Luke 6:45

Good people have good things saved in their hearts. That’s why they say good things. But those who are evil have hearts full of evil, and that’s why they say things that are evil. What people say with their mouths comes from what fills their hearts. ERV

You are responsible for what fills your heart (inner core). Your mouth and heart are entwined; if you want to speak right, then work on what you internalize. In life, things, people, and situations will come at you; they don’t discriminate. It is never about you, it is about your destination. One day God spoke to me after I had vented about some things, He said “The way people treat you has nothing to do with you, but everything to do with them.”  If you are doing what you ought to be doing at the right place and time, then get ready for the criticism of others. Always look up and you will get help, if you look around, you will get distracted.

The problem arises when you become the tough critic of everyone and everything. Critics never make progress, they are always on the sidelines, they never get in the game, forget winning it. If you have so much time to analyze everything that is wrong or could be done better than you are busy with the wrong things. You have so many people who go around blaming their past, the government, people, their childhood, and their past for their present day woes. They are ever ready to give an excuse for not showing up, majoring on the minors and disregarding the essentials.

Many people project their own fears and inadequacies on others. The rise of these attitudes should not be surprising, the bible already told us how things would play out in these days:

2 Timothy 3:1-5

New International Version

3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Someone once said that “Love makes the world go round” The world is filled with so much filth because many people have neglected the only force that will last forever, which is love. The reason why some people are ever ready to give someone a piece of their minds is because of two things: they are their own worse critics and they have unrealistic expectations. Self care is so vital, you can not give what you don’t have; neither can you demand for what you have not given. I have made up my mind to love up on myself without holding back this year. I will invest in me, look good, eat well, and have lots of fun. When you are busy living on purpose and enjoying yourself while doing it, you won’t be carried away by what is going on in the life of others.

I’ve been talking about spring cleaning this month, you need to conduct a heart checkup; if something is misaligned, check yourself and reach out for help when needed. Stop being bitter, aim to become progressively better. Everyone needs love, you will attract what you distribute. If you play your part and encourage others to do the same, the world will be a better place; your home, your workplace, your community, your nation and much more will be a better place.

True love is a person not a fleeting emotion. It is a person who is consistent, committed, dedicated and passionate about every single detail of your life. God is love! If you focus on building your relationship with God, you will be equipped to see the best in others and love them in flaws and all while they are on the journey of becoming more like Christ.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

The Passion Translation

4 Love is large and incredibly patient.[a] Love is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealous[b] when blessing comes to someone else. Love does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. 5 Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated[c] or quick to take offense.[d] 6 Love joyfully celebrates honesty[e] and finds no delight in what is wrong.[f] 7 Love is a safe place of shelter,[g] for it never stops believing the best for others.[h] Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up.

Instead of judging that person, system, leader why not pray for them?

Instead of holding on to past hurts, pains and disappoints and having other people suffer for them, why not for forgive and move forward?

Instead of making excuses and complaining about the challenges, why not be the solution?

Ephesians 4:29

New Living Translation

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

I leave you with this: BE WISE & BE NICE!

Now over to you: How do you with tough critics? Have you ever found yourself being hard on yourself and others?

Leave your comments in the comment section, I love to hear from you!

Take some time to check your heart and pour out anything that will harm you and others.

With lots of love,
